OVERVIEW “Junior Coaching Program”

  1. To provide an opportunity for current & former Thrashers Players, Bantam or older, to begin their Coaching Journey by coaching a 4U, 6U or 8U Thrashers Team.
  2. Instill proper fundamental skills & base knowledge in our Lacrosse Club Members.
  3. Provides mentorship opportunities on multiple levels.
    1. Tyke or younger coached by Bantam or older
    2. Coaches to Junior Coach Coordinator
    3. Coordinator to Executive

 

WHAT’S OUR PLAN?

  • Upon completion of registration for 2020, determine the ideal number of Junior Coaches for the athlete’s registered.
    • WLA provides the following opportunities for Junior Coaches:
      • NCCP Level 1 or Level 2 Training
      • Saskatchewan Lacrosse Officials Certification Course
      • Certified Volunteer Hours for any programs that may be applicable.
    • Pre-Season - Coaching Orientation Sessions
      • WLA’s “Little Thrashers Academy”
        • Off Season development of 4U-8U athlete’s
      • Classroom Portion
        • Junior Coaching Roles, Expectations, Responsibilities
        • Introduction to coaching resources available.
        • Development Goals for all 3 age groups of Athlete’s
          • 4U - General Movements; Intro to Lax: Trapping, Scooping, Cradling, Shooting
          • 6U - Intro to Lacrosse; Trapping, Scooping, Cradling, Passing, Catching, Shooting; Intro to basic defense.
          • 8U - Intro into games beginning with 3 v 3 width with the goal of progressing to 5 v 5 Full Floor; CLA Rule Book: Option X
        • Development of Junior Coaches Individual Goal
        • Development of Practice Plans for the year

      • Practical Floor Session
        • Fundamental Skills Technique Instruction
          • Scooping, Passing, Cradling etc.
        • Basic Drills to help reinforce the fundamental skills learnt/taught
        • Basic Games to help with athletic development.
        • Officials portion to explain/demonstrate the basic infractions & how/why they are called.
          • *****This is a vital step towards improving our base knowledge of Lacrosse as a club. *****
        • Regular Season:
          • Coaching of Thrashers Club Teams 8U and under.
            • Junior Coaches will be supported daily by Junior Coaching Coordinator(s) at all events BUT they will be encouraged to take leadership of their respective teams.
            • Practices and Progression Timelines should be pre-planned following WLA’s Development Model for the respective age groups.
            • Coaching Staffs will be assembled by Junior Coaching Coordinator.
            • Junior Coaches will facilitate:
              • Weekly Practices
              • Any Games/Festivals/Camps applicable
              • Potential “Team Meetings”

    • Get excited to come play Lacrosse
    • Have Fun
    • Learn some skills
    • Meet a local, teen-aged, lacrosse role model to look up to.
  • Junior Coach’s
    • Learn lacrosse from a new perspective
    • Acquire lifelong certification as a lacrosse coach
    • Develop, Grow and/or Enhance Leadership Skills & Qualities
    • Create a sense of community to Give Back/Pay It Forward
